The Danish website oceandecade.dk has published an article about the results from the MEESO project.
In theory, there is great potential for fishing in the area between the upper water layers and the deep sea. In practice, it doesn't quite look that way. If there are myriads of fish, they certainly do not seem to be easily caught. This is the main message in an article about mesopelagic fishery and the MEESO project on the Danish website oceandecade.dk.
As it stands now, the article writes, there is a long way to go for the commercial exploitation of fish species in the mesopelagic zone – if there is a basis at all for these fisheries. The concentrations of fish are very low, which make it difficult and very expensive to catch them in sufficient quantities with sufficient efficiency. In addition, there is a lack of robust data on the stocks, and more calculations of both biological and economic sustainability are needed.
