Results from the MEESO project has been published in ICES Journal of Marine Science.
Material resistance to shear deformation is characterized by shear viscosity. Fish flesh shear viscosity affects the backscattered amplitude around the resonance frequencies of swimbladdered fish and using incorrect values biases the estimates obtained from TS around the resonance.
There is limited information about shear viscosity of fish flesh, especially for mesopelagic species. In this study, flesh shear viscosity of mesopelagic fish is estimated from in-situ broadband backscattering measurement by inversion of viscous-elastic backscattering model. A relation between flesh shear viscosity, swimbladder size, and elongation is given.
