Results from the MEESO project has been published in ICES Journal of Marine Science.
In the article, the authors demonstrate an application of broadband acoustic data in separating North Atlantic mesopelagic scattering layers into different components.
The results highlight that what typically appears as a rather homogenous mesopelagic scattering layer in single frequency data, in reality is made up of organisms with a variety of acoustic properties, and that the composition of the layer varies in both vertical and horizontal domains.
The work represents a major step forward in using acoustic data to classify and describe horizontal and vertical patterns in the mesopelagic zone.
