Work package 1: Data management

This part of the project sets up principles for data management and aims at making all data collected during the project accessible. The topic comprises work package 1 of the MEESO project.

Objectives

The costs to collect new marine data are high and it is therefore paramount that the best use of these data is made, both within the project’s lifetime and beyond it. This work package aims to ultimately make the data collected under the project available and accessible, not only between but also beyond the project partners and to other users related to the EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

Data management will aim to ensure the FAIR principles: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable.

Where possible, this approach will make use of available internationally recognised standards and practices for marine data.

Specific objectives

  • The data collected (biological, acoustic, biochemical, environmental, technological) will be treated and stored at the institute(s) responsible for collection, and then be made available to the ‘central’ collator according to recognised standards and protocols to be agreed and followed by all partners.

  • To ensure discoverability of collected data, a metadata catalogue conforming to the INSPIRE metadata rules will be established.

  • Existing open data licence(s) will be agreed among the partners to facilitate operational accessibility to data beyond the project lifetime.

  • Hosting of the data in existing well managed international data systems to ensure access after the close of the project cycle.
